The Francis Scott Key Motel was built in 1953 by the Hastings family.
The motel was named in honor of the author of the Star Spangled Banner, Francis Scott Key. The property consisted of the Lodge, the two Ranch buildings and eight Vacation Homes.
On July 20th 1972 the property was purchased and operated by William "Kenny" Baker and his business partner Larry Brasher. In 1976 Mr. Baker bought out his partner to become the sole owner and operator. The property has remained in the family ever since. In 1986 Mr. Baker added 32 rooms known as the Maryland and Delaware Buildings. In 1991 the Pennsylvania and Virginia Buildings added 40 rooms to the property. We were proud to celebrate 40 years in business in 2012.
In 1992 Mr. Baker became ill and required a quadruple heart bypass. He asked his only daughter Annemarie to run the business for the summer. Annemarie had been working for the Marriott corporation near Washington DC. Mr. Baker recovered completely from the bypass and realized how much he could enjoy life without having to manage the business himself. He was quick to ask Annemarie and her now husband Jim Dickerson to both come to Ocean City and manage the business. Jim and Annemarie met while both were working as managers for the Marriott Corporation.
In 1993 Jim and Annemarie Dickerson began to manage the Francis Scott Key Motel alongside Mr. Baker. In 1995 another 40 rooms were added (New York and New Jersey buildings). 1999 brought yet another 40 rooms to the complex called the Ohio and Carolina buildings. In 2001 cancer struck Mr. Baker and sadly his battle ended in October 2002.
Jim and Annemarie well versed at the operation of the property continue to manage the operation. In 2005 an additional 20 rooms, Picnic Pavilion and the Caribbean Key Indoor Theme Pool were added bringing the total number of rooms to 232. We renovated the main lodge in 2010 along with ninety guest rooms. In 2014, we renovated an additional 80 rooms and began the construction of Shipwreck Cove. The new themed outdoor pool, hot tub, mini golf, gift shop and bar has been a great new amenity that replaced the old outdoor pool. We are dedicated to continuing to improve and add new amenities to give our guests a fun, affordable vacation experience.
